Applying EPB

Applying EPB manually

OSW045023R
  1. Depress the brake pedal.

  2. Pull up the EPB switch.

Make sure the brake warning light () illuminates. If AUTO HOLD is active when the vehicle is turned off, EPB is applied automatically. The EPB is also applied if the EPB switch is pulled up after the vehicle is turned off. Do not operate the EPB whilst driving, except in emergency situations.

NOTE
  • If the vehicle does not remain stationary on a steep incline or whilst pulling a trailer, follow the steps below:

    1. Apply the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).

    2. Pull up the EPB switch and hold it for more than 3 seconds.

  • A clicking sound or electric brake motor whine may be heard when applying or releasing the EPB. This is normal and indicates proper system operation.

Applying EPB automatically

The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) is applied automatically under the following conditions:

  • The EPB is overheated.

  • The driver turns off the vehicle whilst AUTO HOLD is active.

  • The EPB is requested by other systems.

NOTE

For vehicles equipped with EPB and AUTO HOLD:

  • If the vehicle is turned off whilst AUTO HOLD is active, the EPB will engage automatically.

  • To prevent this, turn off AUTO HOLD before turning off the vehicle.

Emergency braking

If there is a problem with the brake pedal whilst driving, emergency braking is possible by pulling up and holding the EPB switch. Braking is possible only whilst you are holding the EPB switch. However, braking distance will be longer than normal.

WARNING

Do not operate EPB whilst the vehicle is moving except in an emergency situation. Applying the EPB whilst the vehicle is moving at normal speeds can cause a sudden loss of control of the vehicle. If you must use the EPB to stop the vehicle, use great caution in applying the brake.

NOTE
  • During emergency braking by the EPB, the parking brake warning light will appear to indicate that the system is operating.

  • If you notice a continuous noise or burning smell when the EPB is used for emergency braking, have your vehicle checked by a professional workshop. Kia recommends that you visit an authorised Kia dealer/service partner.
