HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system

The Kia Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor for power. The electric motor uses a high voltage Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) battery.

Depending on the driving conditions, the HEV computer selectively operates between the engine and the electric motor, or both at the same time.

Driving the vehicle with the electric motor (powered by the HEV battery) increases fuel efficiency.

The engine occasionally turns on (even when the vehicle is idling) to act as a generator to maintain the charge level of the HEV battery. The battery power also charges when you are slowing down or using regenerative braking.
