Seat belt restraint system
For maximum protection from the seat belts, always wear them when the vehicle is moving:
-
The proper position for the shoulder belt is midway over your shoulder and across your collarbone.
-
Never allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. See Child Restraint System (CRS) for further discussion.
Twisted seat belt
Make sure your seat belt is not twisted when worn. A twisted seat belt may not properly protect you in an accident and could even cut into your body and cause serious injury.
Shoulder belt
-
Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. An improperly positioned shoulder belt cannot protect you in the event of a crash.
-
Always wear both the shoulder portion and lap portion of the lap/shoulder belt.
Damaged seat belt
Any damage to webbing or hardware may cause serious injury or death in an accident. The entire seat belt assembly should be replaced when any part of the webbing or hardware is damaged, or even after it has been worn in an accident, even if damage to the webbing or assembly is not apparent.
Seat belts are designed to bear upon the skeletal structure of the body and should be worn with the lap belt part of the belt low and snug on the hips and the shoulder belt over the shoulder and across the chest. Avoid wearing the lap section of the belt across the abdominal area.
Seat belts should be adjusted as firmly as possible, consistent with comfort, to provide maximum protection.
A slack belt can greatly reduce the protection afforded to the wearer.
Take care to avoid contaminating the webbing with polishes, oils, and chemicals, particularly battery acid. Use mild soap and water to clean the belt. Replace the belt if the webbing becomes frayed, contaminated, or damaged:
-
Do not make any modifications or additions that could either prevent the seat belt adjusting devices from operating to remove slack or prevent the seat belt assembly from being adjusted to remove slack.
-
When you fasten the seat belt, be careful not to latch it in the buckles of other seats. It is very dangerous and you may not be properly protected.
-
Do not fasten and unfasten the seat belt while driving. This could cause loss of control and an accident resulting in death, serious injury, or property damage.
-
When fastening the seat belt, make sure that the seat belt does not pass over objects other than clothing.
Seat belt buckle
Do not allow foreign material (gum, crumbs, coins, liquids, and so on) to obstruct the seat belt buckle receptor. This may prevent the seat belt from fastening securely, , and could result in serious injury or death in the event of a crash.
