Good driving practices

  • Start the engine while placing the shift lever in P (Park) position, applying the parking brake and depressing the brake pedal.

  • Do not shift into any position when the engine rpm is high.

  • When moving the shift lever, be sure to depress the brake pedal and shift it to the desired position while checking the gear position indicated on the cluster, and slowly take your foot off the brake pedal.

  • Vehicles equipped with the automatic transmission tend to move even without depressing the accelerator pedal while idling in any position in D, R, or manual mode, so be sure to depress the brake and apply the parking brake fully while stopping the vehicle.

  • When stopping the vehicle on a hill, do not use the accelerator pedal, but depress the brake pedal.

  • When standing on an uphill, apply the parking brake or brake instead of using the power of the engine to stop the vehicle.

  • Do not press the accelerator pedal in R (Reverse) position or in any forward shift position while depressing the brake pedal.

  • Do not rev the engine at excessive high speed while parking or stopping the vehicle.

WARNING
  • When driving uphill or downhill, always shift to D (Drive) position for driving forward or shift to R (Reverse) position for driving backward, and check the gear position indicated on the cluster before driving. Driving in the opposite direction of the selected gear can lead to a dangerous situation by shutting off the engine and affecting the braking performance.

  • Never move the shift lever from P (Park) position or N (Neutral) position to any other position with depressing the accelerator pedal. It may cause a sudden movement of the vehicle and result in an unexpected accident

  • Do not shift the shift lever into N (Neutral) position while driving. It is dangerous because the engine brake does not operate.

  • When parking or stopping the vehicle, if the shift lever is not properly shifted to P (Park) position, the vehicle may move when external force is applied. Therefore, if you are away from the vehicle even for a moment, for your safety, always place the shift lever to P (Park) position, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

When starting the vehicle

  1. Move the shift lever with depressing the brake pedal.

  2. Take your foot off the brake pedal, check that the vehicle moves slowly, then start the vehicle by depressing the accelerator pedal.

The vehicle may move forward or backward even without depressing the accelerator pedal when shifting the gear in D, R or manual mode. Especially, the high engine rpm (approximately 1,500~2,000 rpm or more depending on the outside temperature) can cause sudden vehicle movement.

WARNING

When shifting the gear from N (Neutral) position or P (Park) position into another position, be sure to depress the brake pedal. If shifting the gear with depressing the accelerator pedal, it may occur unexpected accidents due to a sudden movement of the vehicle.

Rapid acceleration during normal driving

In D (Drive) position, it is possible to pass the other vehicles.

If you want to pass another vehicle, depress the accelerator pedal fully, at which time the transmission will downshift to the lower gear and accelerate rapidly. Therefore, when passing another vehicle, keep the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front to prevent a collision.

WARNING

Do not shift the shift lever into N (Neutral) position. It is dangerous because the engine brake will not operate.

Moving up a steep grade from a standing start

To move up a steep grade from a standing start, depress the brake pedal, shift the shift lever to D position, or 1st gear in the manual mode depending on load weight and steepness of the grade, release the parking brake.

Depress the accelerator gradually while releasing the brake pedal.

  • When starting the vehicle from a stop on a steep hill, the vehicle may have a tendency to roll backward. Shifting the shift lever into 2nd gear will help prevent the vehicle from rolling backward.
